Gearing Up For Black Friday

It's almost Thanksgiving and time to cook the turkey, make cornbread dressing, chocolate pie, sweet tea and all the side dishes. We are having Watergate Salad and a big pot of seafood gumbo. The temperature should be in the low 70's. Sound like fun with the family? I think so. I show the old colander because it is still one of my favorite pieces. The buyer must be loving it today. I imagine that it sits high on a shelf in a very cool kitchen in the south. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Now, let the shopping begin.

Just Love Picnics
I just love a good picnic and I can imagine how a picnic would be with this little brown tweed picnic basket. I found the delightful piece in Hot Coffee, Mississippi. Do you mean there's such as place as Hot Coffee? Yes, and this is where the little basket lived at one time. There must have been a sweet little lake close by. The basket would have been filled with plastic plates and utensils. Wine. Fruit. Meats. Nuts. Cheese. You can only imagine! I hope your day is filled with picnics, light breezes and a beautiful Mississippi lake.

Hot Coffee

So, I happened up on a secondhand store in Hot Coffee, Mississippi. We made our jokes about the town. Wonder what people say when they ask, Where are you all from? The person answers, "Hot Coffee". No, I didn't ask, What do you want with your breakfast? I asked, Where are you from? And the jokes went on and on. So, I looked through the piles of vintage and mostly thrift shop finds. One such find was a cracked, chipped Fiesta Mixing Bowl in turquoise.
It was a lovely find. I just hated that it was cracked and chipped but if an interior designer or other creative type puts it on a shelf for color, who will know? Hope you have a great week!

Why A Church Window Belongs On A Refrigerator
So we have finally returned to life as normal after the last hurricane, Isaac. The electricity's back. The tree limbs are picked up. The roof repaired. And yet, we didn't even have it bad. Many people in our area have flooding and have lost everything. If I can glance up at an old church window and reflect on my blessings, that is what I will do. Today I listed a refrigerator magnet on Etsy. I never dreamed I would be into photo magnets but this one I like. It's an old abandoned church in St. Francisville, Louisiana and it's charming. When I see it, I think about how grateful I am to have my home, my family, my photography. Comforting, I would say.

Front Page of Etsy: Sweet

So I wake up to no electricity, thanks to Isaac, plug in the loud generator and read my emails. Congratulations on the first page of Etsy. It is such a thrill and only my fourth time as a curator to accomplish such a feat.

Going to the Mountains

Love the thought of high elevations and lovely scenery where the air is fresh and the elk might show their faces.
Estes Park is a vacation destination that transforms trips to the Colorado Rockies into dream vacations in paradise.

Oh, Etsy Front Page: So Sweet

May You Feel A Cool Breeze

Thinking about autumn and what a wonderful time it will be. The leaves drop to cover the ground. The squirrels prepare for winter. The coyotes begin to howl. The coyotes? My goodness. Where do you live? In the country? Away from civilization? Not close to shopping malls or thrift shops? Yes, that's true. And now you know the inspiration behind the treasury for this day. I hope you feel a cool breeze where you live. May it let you know that autumn's on the way.

Old Abandon Church I Just Love

So this weekend while attending the Hummingbird Festival in St. Francisville, I ran across an old Episcopal Church that was abandoned but being renovated. What a find. St. Mary's Episcopal Church was built in 1857 to serve approximately 20 plantation families in the remote Tunica area north of St. Francisville, LA. The church was built on the Old East Tunica Road on 5 acres donated by Sarah Mulford. The title description is written "per aversionem" so that the boundaries cannot be identified exactly.

How About A Gift Certificate?
This time of year everyone's looking for a new idea. Should the giver choose handmade or vintage? Should the item cost $25 or $50. Should the giver look at all the Etsy sites or just a few? The best idea could be a gift certificate. Choose a gift certificate at Rocky Springs Vintage, for example, and the recipient has a year to redeem the gift certificate. A gift certificate will be sent for printing. The lucky receipient gets to make their own choice, choose their own item that reminds them of a quieter time, a less stressful life. Ah, vintage. It's what's for Christmas. Have a great shopping experience.

I Am What I Am "Popeye"

Hello, We are Rocky Springs Vintage where the most amazing things happen on a regular basis. I discovered the cutest little vendor mall in Summit, Mississippi this week. I had to hold myself back because there were so many eye catchers. I purchased a Popeye TV Lap tray in near perfect condition. It held a place in my heart because as a child and young adult I watched Popeye the Sailor Man on comic television. He loved his spinach you know. The can popped open and the spinach flew into his mouth. Check out this wonderful red tray to be propped up or used as a fold out tray.
Hope your day goes great, Gail

Saturday Morning

It is a beautiful morning in South Louisiana. The clouds are grey with just a tinge of orange peaking through. It's going to be another scorcher today with highs in the 90's. I am being too nice. It will be every bit of 99 or maybe one hundred degrees. How do we stand the heat? We drink iced tea. Look at pictures of snow. We freeze bottled water. We shoot vintage photographs early in the morning. We wear shorts and t-shirts. We dream of Alaska or Wisconsin. So what's up with you? I feel a little like an estate sale or just rummaging around someone's old things.

Etsy Getting A Tune-up

So I stare at my coffee cup, read, look out my kitchen window, think about the day and hope for a good one.

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

So I noticed other people selling buttons and I say to myself, hey, I have buttons and no longer have the dress, shirt or slacks. Buttons are used for all kinds of supplies and creations. I am really interested in mixed media things on Etsy. Want to do that some day. I hope your week goes well. Stay in touch.

Two Estate Sales. That's How I Roll.

The past two weekends have been really fun. The first estate sale was in Bogalusa, Louisiana where the man and his wife went antique shopping most of their lives. My first purchase was a wonderful oak rocking chair. I went back for the second day of the sale and bought even more pieces. I guess in all, I came away with 15 items. The next sale was in Brookhaven, Mississippi where I was in the home of a former physician. Oh,
I guess I found 6 items there. The homeowner loved oriental art, sculpture, furniture and really lovely pieces. Two totally different sales. Great pieces in both places. I wonder what today holds.

June Morning

Sometimes I wake up early and watch the morning fog lay over the cow pasture. It is a beautiful sight. The hummingbirds are still asleep or not moving yet. The dogs are still sleeping. The only one awake is Callie, the calico cat, who is ready for her breakfast.

Happy Mother's Day!
I loved how you took care of your mother all those years. How you learned to fly. And of course, how you obtained your nursing degree because you wanted to help others. I hope your day will be filled with wonderful people and places. Know that I am thinking of you today and always, Gail

Vintage Altered Tobacco Case

While cruising through the pages of Etsy this morning and putting together one of my infamous treasuries, I stumbled across an interesting piece. She started this with a vintage tobacco case. She goes on to say then added scraps of paper, and vintage lace, an old black plastic flower, that once was a 50's ear clip and adorned it with a fresh water pearl. A ring with two metal keys in front of an old map of the world. The chain is a vintage 800 (stamped 800, not 925) silver watch chain and is 48cm (18in). The tobacco case is 6.5 cm = 2.6" x 3.5 cm = 1.4"

I visited two of my old haunts this week. I was in Thibodaux to meet with the City Council when I decided to cruise by Habitat for Humanity and Salvation Army. Found several great pieces. The first is a glass relish tray and the second, a USA California Pottery Soup Tureen which I will shoot today and list today. I really love the hunt.

Really Sweet Little Bowl

I found this sweet little bowl recently and it reminded me of my grandmother's house. While I know it isn't the prettiest. It isn't the ugliest either. I had in mind that someone might take it and break it and make it into a piece of jewelry or brooch. I just think it is sweet. You?

All Things Bright and Beautiful

It is that time of year when the lighting shines bright in the meadow. The clouds dance in circular motion. The birds sing a special tune. The robins are everywhere.... getting ready for that trip up North. The winds blow the trees ever so gently.

Collecting Vintage Shoes and All Kinds of Things

The wonderful thing with being a collector of many vintage items is I end up with all kinds of little boxes and things. It's no wonder that when my husband needed a bag that wouldn't leak when he filled it with ice and placed the bag of ice on his ailing shoulder that I had the perfect thing. In my collection I had a Comfort Bag. No really, a folding ice cap water bottle bag for cold and hot applications from the 50s or 60s. It even had the original box. So I filled the comfort bag with water and placed it in the freezer for the afternoon treatment. I have lots of vintage. Take these red, white and blue shoes in a size 9. You might think they look like a great clown outfit but no, at one time, these were very cool and complimented navy slacks and a red shirt. That was the 70's. So what are you collecting today?

Ralph Lauren Red Short Sleeve Shirt

The brand was launched in 1967 when Ralph Lauren, born Ralph Lifshitz, received a $50,000 loan and started a line of men's ties.Prior to starting Ralph Lauren, he worked for Datrian Riser. By 1969 he had a boutique store within the Manhattan department store Bloomingdale's. Around that same time he released a line of women's suits that were tailored in a classic men's style, which was when the first Polo emblem was seen. It was on the cuff of the women's suit. In 1971, Polo Ralph Lauren launched its first women's collection and his first stand-alone store in Beverly Hills, California. Ten years later, in 1981, the brand went global with its first international store on London's New Bond Street. The Polo Sport line was introduced in 1993. The company went public in 1997. By 2007 Ralph Lauren had over 35 boutiques in the United States.
The brand now produces clothing, accessories, fragrances, furniture, and operates the restaurant RL in Chicago.

The Lovers, The Dreamers and Me

While creating a treasury ( a space with 16 places to show Etsy goods ) I came across a lovely little tune that reminded me of lovers, rainbows and me. It is the words to the famous RAINBOW CONNECTION by

Kermit the Frog

Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side
Rainbow's are visions
They're only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some chose to
Believe it
But I know they're wrong wait and see

Someday we'll find it
The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

Where To Shop

I have been buying vintage since I was 20 years old, so anywhere I go I try to find a thrift shop or vintage shop. I just love it. I remember working and volunteering in the Habitat for Humanity Restore in Thibodaux. Oh what fun it was to find a rooster cookie jar, a comforter, earrings or old telephone. Since that time I shop at another Habitat for Humanity Restore in Mandeville, Louisiana. What a find it was. The warehouse is full of furniture and clothes, household items and antiques. I will often break for an estate sale as I drive through a country town. There is nothing more fun than the thrill of the find!

Happy New Year

I promise to work less, play more, slim up, relax longer, show love, take a nature walk, be more affectionate, not take things so personally and laugh a lot.

That's my resolution for 2012! You?
